No one likes a try-hard.
Facebook is a prime example that no one likes a try-hard. It started as the cool alternative to MySpace, where the non-neon covered kids went to be all educated and cool. Then ‘faceyb’ infiltrated the adult communities – people being sucked in with company networks and the hottest time-wasting device since Friends Reunited.
A few years on, and Facebook hit it’s prime. It’s got practically everyone signing up to poke each other and share pictures from that amazebongz night out… Then something weird happened. We started hearing more from Mark Zuckerberg, about privacy issues and adverts.

A few design and layout changes later and we are here, in the Timeline era of Facebook.
Despite Facebook looking and functioning the best it ever has; People are bored, sick and tired of Mark Z and Facebook. People are leaving and not just the odd person trying to be cool. They are leaving in their droves. 12 people I know have left this month so far.
Now that Facebook has been floated on the stock market, Mark desperately married his long-term girlfriend on the day of floatation for the news coverage and it STILL went down in price… Is this evidence that Facebook is even more of a try-hard than the others?
When MySpace went all corporate it died. Facebook have made the same mistake – the only reason it’s survived this far is that way more people use it, so it will die an uglier and slower death.
Just like how we’d have preferred that the BBC bought the rights to Big Brother instead of Channel 5 and made it into a true human experiment, we’d prefer if Facebook became the non-profit internet platform of preferred communication with no commercial interests.
Just imagine, a platform that all websites can feed into and everyone has a profile, but it has no advertising on it, no sponsored stories and no ramming something down your throat that you don’t want.
